Arc Raiders Beginner Guide

New to Arc Raiders? This guide covers gear fear, map unlocks, extraction basics, ARC enemies on Dam, loot priorities, Hideout build order, and the most common mistakes that kill new players — plus one tip that changes everything.

What is Arc Raiders

PvPvE extraction shooter by Embark Studios. You raid abandoned sectors, fight ARC robot enemies, loot blueprints and gear, and extract before time runs out. Other players are also in your session and can be hostile or cooperative. Death means losing your carried gear — but Arc Raiders has much lower gear fear than similar games.

Gear Fear — And Why It Matters Less Here

Arc Raiders gives you a free backup loadout if you die. Gear is meant to be consumed, not hoarded. Safe Pocket slots on your shield protect your most valuable items even on death. The community consensus is that gear fear in Arc Raiders is intentionally low compared to games like Tarkov. Treat gear as consumable, play boldly, and you will improve faster.

The Five Maps and How to Unlock Them

Map Unlock Notes
Dam Battlegrounds Available from start 30 min raid, beginner-friendly
Buried City After ~6 raids Any outcome counts
Spaceport / Acerra After ~12 raids
Blue Gate After ~18 raids
Stella Montis After 24 raids

Stella Montis was originally unlocked through a community event in November 2025 (Breaking New Ground). New players now access it by completing 24 raids across any maps.

Only the number of raids completed matters — not kills, not extractions. Play Dam until the next map unlocks.

A sixth map is planned for 2026 as part of Embark's ongoing roadmap. Check the live events tracker for the latest updates.

Start on Dam Battlegrounds

Shortest timer, no unlock requirement, most beginner-friendly ARC enemy types. Dam is a swampy industrial zone with forests, warehouses, and open battleground areas. Good for learning movement, looting, and extraction basics.

ARC Enemies on Dam — What You'll Face

Surveyors — Laser drones. Use cover and avoid open firefights. They cannot shoot below approximately 10 m — lure one under a ledge and fire from below.

Leapers — Jumping disk enemies. Strafe sideways and use doorways to funnel them.

Rocketeers — Flying mortarers. Lead your shots or wait behind terrain for them to fire, then retaliate.

Bastion / Bombardier — Rare heavy tanks. Retreat unless prepared.

Queen / Matriarch — Only in special conditions. Avoid entirely as a beginner.

Loot Priorities

Always grab: blueprints, research items (wire, battery), keys, blue/purple crafting materials, weapon parts. Skip: masses of common scrap, ammo for weapons you don't use, low-value junk. Put blueprints and quest items in Safe Pockets immediately.

Extraction Basics

Identify your nearest extract before you start looting. There are 4 extraction types: Cargo Elevator (loud, ~90s, no key), Metro Station (Buried City only, pinwheel puzzle required), Airshaft (faster, quieter, Blue Gate and Stella Montis), Raider Hatch (silent, instant window, requires key). No safe zone at extract — enemies can attack during countdown. Downed squadmates auto-revive on extraction — never leave them behind. Full detail: Arc Raiders Extraction Points.

Hideout — What to Build First

Safe Stash first (more storage), then Workbench (craft ammo and simple items), then Quick Assembly (grenades and adrenaline). Follow Shani and Celeste's early quests — they unlock these stations as rewards.

The Most Common Beginner Mistakes

One Tip That Changes Everything

The don't-shoot emote works more often than you think. Many players in the session are also just trying to loot and extract. Communicating with voice or emote can turn a potential fight into a non-event. Once you stop fearing other players and start thinking tactically, the game opens up.
